Set in no man’s land between the opposing trenches of the First World War, this piece shows a lone soldier moving cautiously through the mud and ruin, heading towards the barbed wire and into the unknown. The sun sets before him, forming the shape of a giant red poppy – and wrapped around it, in gold, are the words:

“At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them...”

This is a commemorative piece, honouring those who served in the Great War. The poppy is a powerful and familiar symbol of remembrance, drawn from the flowers that bloomed across the battlefields of Flanders after the fighting ceased. The words encircling the sun are taken from Laurence Binyon’s 1914 poem For the Fallen, traditionally read aloud on Remembrance Day.

There is no colour used in the landscape – a deliberate choice to reflect the bleakness and destruction of conflict. But the sky and the poppy are filled with vivid colour, to represent hope and renewal are on the horizon of tomorrow."

Purchase this amazing print by our very own Johnny Askew, commemorating the poppy fields of World War I. Available at in an A4 and A3 size print, with or without a frame, this poignant piece serves as a reminder of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

All proceeds raised from the sale of our artwork go directly to supporting the Art of War Foundation providing much needed support to improve mental health.
